Muhamed Bešić

Muhamed Bešić (Bosnian pronunciation: [muxǎmed běʃitɕ]; born 10 September 1992) is a Bosnian professional footballer who plays as a defensive midfielder for Premier League club Sheffield United, on loan from Everton, and the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team.

Bešić started his professional career at Hamburger SV, playing mainly in its reserve team, before joining Ferencváros in 2012. Two years later, he moved to Everton, who loaned him to Middlesbrough in 2018 and to Sheffield United in 2019.

A former youth international for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bešić made his senior international debut in 2010, and is the youngest player ever to represent the country. He made over 40 caps since and represented the nation at their first major tournament, the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Club career

Early career

Born in Berlin to Bosnian parents, Bešić started playing football at local clubs, before joining Hamburger SV's youth academy in 2009.[3] He made his professional debut against Borussia Dortmund on 12 November 2010 at the age of 18.[4]

In March 2012, Bešić was suspended from the first team, due to lack of discipline. Bosnian media also claimed that manager Thorsten Fink "strangled" Bešić and threw him out of the dressing room.[5]

In August 2012, Bešić moved to Hungarian team Ferencváros on free transfer.[6] On 5 May 2013, he scored his first professional goal against Paks.[7]

Everton

On 24 July 2014, Bešić was transferred to English side Everton for an undisclosed fee. Transfer fee was speculated to be in the region of €5 million.[8]

2014–15 season

He made his competitive debut for the club on 30 August against Chelsea.[9] He made his first start for Everton in the Merseyside derby on 27 September.[10]

He finished his first season at the club with 31 appearances in total, 23 of which came in Premier League.[11]

2015–16 season

In July 2015, Bešić picked up a hamstring injury in pre-season game against Swindon Town, which ruled him out for the start of season.[12] He made his season debut in EFL Cup game against Barnsley on 26 August.[13]

In February 2016, Bešić was voted Everton's Player of the Month for January.[14]

On 29 February 2016, he signed a new five-year deal with the team.[15]

Bešić's season was marked by hamstring injuries, which limited his playing time and appearances. Alongside the one picked up during pre-season, he had two more, in both his legs.[16][17]

2016–17 season

In July 2016, Bešić changed his shirt number from 17 he wore for previous two seasons to 21.[18]

On 3 August, in a pre-season game against Manchester United, Bešić suffered a severe knee injury, which was diagnosed as anterior cruciate ligament tear. The injury required a surgery, and he was ruled out for at least six months.[19]

In late December, he began with light training, and he was given medical all-clear in March 2017.[20]

However, Bešić made no official appearances for Everton until the end of season.[21]

2017–18 season

Bešić returned to pitch in UEFA Europa League play-offs against Hajduk Split on 17 August 2017, over a year since the injury.[22]

In January 2018, Bešić was loaned to Championship outfit Middlesbrough until the end of season.[23]

2018–19 season

In August 2018, his loan to Middlesbrough was extended for additional season.[24] He made his season debut on 24 August against West Bromwich Albion, and provided an assist for the winning goal of the game.[25] On 2 October, he scored his first goal of the season against Ipswich Town.[26]

2019–20 season

On 8 August 2019, Bešić was sent on a season-long to Sheffield United.[27] He played his first official game for the team in EFL Cup against Blackburn Rovers on 27 August.[28] Two months later, he made his league debut away at West Ham United.[29] Bešić scored his first goal of the season in FA Cup tie against Millwall.[30]

International career

Bešić claimed in an interview that he had declined an offer to play for Germany, because he only wished to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina.[31] He was first part of Bosnia and Herzegovina under-21 team.[32]

In November 2010, he received his first senior call-up, for friendly game against Slovakia,[33] and debuted in that game on 17 November. Bešić thereby became the youngest player to ever play for Bosnia and Herzegovina on senior level. The record was previously held by Miralem Pjanić.[34]

In June 2014, Bešić was named in Bosnia and Herzegovina's squad for 2014 FIFA World Cup, country's first major competition.[35] He made his competition debut in the opening group match on 15 June, which ended in narrow loss to Argentina at the Maracanã Stadium.[36]

Style of play

During his career, Bešić has been deployed as a right back and as a centre back, although his natural position by his own words is defensive midfielder.[37]

He was described in 2014 by Everton manager Roberto Martínez as a "very complete footballer", who "has got a very natural balance about knowing that he can be strong and aggressive but in the same way he's a technical player on the ball."[38]

Personal life

Bešić has many tattoos, his first being the word Bosanac (Bosnian). Some of many are also names of his parents and brother.[39]

He is a practicing Muslim; along with international teammates Ibrahim Šehić, Armin Hodžić, Izet Hajrović, Sead Kolašinac, Edin Višća and Ervin Zukanović he visited a mosque in Zenica during national team concentration.[40] On 4 July 2013, he became the Bosnian ambassador for the Emmaus charity organisation.[41]

Bešić has two daughters with his long-time girlfriend Jessica.[42]
