List of paintings by Thomas Cole

Thomas Cole was a 19th-century American artist widely regarded as a founder of the Hudson River School, and known for his romantic landscape and history paintings. Influenced by European painters, but with a strong American sensibility,[1] he was prolific throughout his career and worked primarily with oil. His works are typically allegoric and often show small figures set against moody and evocative wilderness landscapes that served as escapism from the smog-filled cityscapes of industrial revolution-era Britain in which he grew up.[2]

His works are held across a broad variety of major and national museums; this list consists only of paintings documented in public collections. The medium, if not oil on canvas, is noted.
