These are the Billboard magazine R&B singles chart number one hits of 1979. 20 songs reached number one during the year. "Good Times" had the longest reign at the top at six weeks from late July to early September.
Eleven acts reached number one for the first time, including Cheryl Lynn, Chuck Brown & the Soul Searchers, Instant Funk, Sister Sledge, GQ, Peaches & Herb, McFadden & Whitehead, Anita Ward, Donna Summer, Michael Jackson, and Prince; Jackson had previously went to the top position with his former group The Jackson 5. Sister Sledge was also the only act to have multiple number ones during 1979.
