The twenty-third season of the Pokémon animated series is known as Pocket Monsters (ポケットモンスター, Poketto Monsutā) in Japan, Pocket Monsters W (포켓몬스터 W, Poketmonseuteo W) in South Korea, and internationally as Pokémon Journeys: The Series. The season premiered on November 17, 2019 on TV Tokyo in Japan, and on April 8, 2020 on Tooniverse in South Korea. In the United States, it is a web television season that premiered on June 12, 2020 on Netflix. This season follows the adventures of Ash Ketchum (voiced in Japanese by Rika Matsumoto, in Korean by Lee Seon-ho, and in English by Sarah Natochenny) and new protagonist Goh (voiced in Japanese by Daiki Yamashita, in Korean by Song Harim, and in English by Zeno Robinson)[1] as they travel across all eight regions of the Pokémon franchise, including the new Galar region from Pokémon Sword and Shield, along with a young girl named Chloe (voiced in Japanese by Kana Hanazawa, in Korean by Yoon Eunseo, and in English by Cherami Leigh) and learn to use Gigantamax moves.[2][3]

On April 19, 2020, TV Tokyo, MediaNet and ShoPro announced that the series would be going on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan, with production temporarily suspended. Reruns of old episodes of the Pokémon anime on TV Tokyo in Japan from April 26 to May 31, 2020.[4] On the same day, the production of the new episodes was resumed after Japan announced the cancellation of the Emergency situation, and after rerun of old episodes on TV Tokyo. New episodes began airing again weekly from June 7, 2020.[5][6] On April 23, 2020, The Pokémon Company International announced that Netflix has secured the U.S. rights to air future seasons, starting with "Pokémon Journeys".[7] The first twelve episodes are available for streaming as of June 12, 2020, with additional episodes to be released quarterly.[8] The series premiered on Teletoon in Canada on May 9, 2020.[9] The show is set for release on September 1, 2020 on Pop in the United Kingdom.[10]

The Japanese opening song is "One, Two, Three" (1・2・3 ワン・ツー・スリー, Wan, Tsū, Surī) by After the Rain's Soraru and Mafumafu. The ending song is "Pokémon Shiritori (Full Size Ver.)" (ポケモンしりとり フルサイズVer., Pokémon Shiritori Furu Saizu Ver.) by the Pokémon Music Club's Pokémon Kids 2019. The Korean opening song is "Start of a Journey" (여행의 시작, Yeohaeng-ui Sijak) by Lee Il-song. The ending song is "Memorizing Pokémon Names" (포켓몬 이름 외우기, Pokémon Ireum Oeugi) by Cha$e."[11][12] The English opening song, "The Journey Starts Today",[13] is performed by Canadian indie pop band Walk off the Earth.[14] Its instrumental version serves as the ending theme.

Professor Cerise wants new trainer Goh to choose his first Pokemon from among the Kanto starters, but he refuses because he wants to choose Mew instead. The sudden appearance of Lugia causes Ash and Goh to meet and both of them to go on the ride of a lifetime to learn more about Lugia.

A bunch of Ivysaur are causing chaos throughout Vermilion City, and Professor Cerise sends Ash and Goh to investigate. While learning the cause of the trouble, they not only learn more about each other but also clash with Team Rocket, who are now using Pokéballs supplied by Giovanni via a Pelipper that arrives whenever they call it. With the help of the Ivysaur, Pikachu defeats Team Rocket and the Ivysaur evolve into Venusaur.

Traveling to Sinnoh to return it, they learn that Piplup ran away because of its jealousy about Lauren's Croagunk, who's competing with Piplup for her attention. The two Pokémon decide to settle their quarrel by competing in the Pokémon Iceberg Race, which Ash and Goh decide to enter as well.

To get there, Goh catches a Dewgong to use as a Ride Pokemon, but its chasing a female Dewgong it's fallen in love with sends them headlong into a storm; fortunately, they are rescued by Dragonite who bring them to their island. While learning about the Dratini, Dragonair and Dragonite living there, Ash and Pikachu help a Dragonair who's having trouble learning how to fly.

Meanwhile, Chloe isn't sure what her dream for the future is and whether or not she even likes Pokémon, but returning to the lab she becomes caught up in the battle between Ash/Goh and Gengar.

Ash and Goh discover that Dynamax can be controlled during the final battle between Lance and Leon, in which Leon's Charizard defeats Lance's Gyarados. Meanwhile, Team Rocket attempts to capture a Drednaw by battling it with a Bellsprout, but Drednaw then goes into Gigantamax form and goes on a rampage.

When a strike from the Daimax Kajirigame cracks open the ground and releases energy, Pikachu becomes a Daimax Pikachu without the use of a Daimax Band. With help from Dande, Satoshi and Pikachu defeat Kajirigame, with both Pokemon returning to normal after the battle. Satoshi asks to have a battle with Dande, who later sneaks up on Satoshi and Go and agrees to battle Satoshi.

Due to the hot sand making walking difficult, Pokemon Ranger Keira suggests that they use their Pokemon to sled across. Reaching the ruin, Satoshi, Go and Keira meet the Group Leader. They explore the ruins, but find the path to face the Ancient Titan, a giant Golugh, is set with deadly traps, leading up to a battle.

While waiting for his parents to arrive, he and Hibanny spot a Karakara being bullied by a gang of Mankeys. When the Mankeys steal Karakara's bone, Go, Hibanny and some of his Pokemon decide to help Karakara get its precious bone back. Meanwhile, because Go had left behind his present to his parents, Satoshi and Pikachu come looking for him, and after learning what happened volunteer to help.

The Gangar that "haunted" the Sakuragi lab is back, and it's as mischievous as ever! Satoshi and Go resume their race to catch it, but it gets away. Go starts insinuating that Gangar might be back to curse Satoshi, and all of a sudden weird accidents start happening to Satoshi. Later, he literally runs into a Trainer whom Gangar (who's been hiding in Satoshi's shadow) recognizes as its former Trainer who had abandoned it. Satoshi intervenes when the enraged Gangar attacks its former Trainer, and Rocket-Dan (who've been watching from the sidelines) decides that they want Gangar for themselves.

While training with Satoshi and Pikachu, Hibanny is teased by Go's Hihidaruma into using a Fire-type move, but things don't go well. Hibanny is frustrated, and when Go seems unsympathetic Hibanny runs away. It manages to learn Sparks, but Go is too interested in catching Pokemon to notice. Chasing after a Pelipper, Go and Hibanny run into Rocket-Dan, who attacks them using a Nyorobon and a Kamukame. Hibanny is quickly defeated when its Sparks move fails again, and Satoshi and Pikachu join in, with Pikachu "blasting off" Rocket-Dan. When Go again seems unsympathetic, Hibanny runs away again and again runs into Rocket-Dan, who battle it again. This time, Go and Hibanny work as a team, causing Hibanny to evolve into Rabbifuto, whose new Sparks Kick move defeats Rocket-Dan. However, in the battle's aftermath, the relationship between Go and the former Hibanny may never be the same.

However, with Matis away, the gym is now being run by Visquez. Their battle is a two-on-two match officiated by a Rotom Drone, with Pikachu starting out for Satoshi and Raichu for Visquez. During the battle, Satoshi recalls Pikachu and sends out Gangar, who defeats Raichu. Visquez sends out Marumine, who defeats Gangar, so it's all up to Pikachu ... and Rabbifuto is watching closely!

The six visiting children are split into three teams: Team Blue escorted by Satoshi and Pikachu; Team Red by Go, Rabbifuto and Koharu; and Team Yellow by Professor Sakuragi and Koharu's Wanpachi, to explore a section of the city and learn about the Pokémon they meet. Naturally, the kids are in for different but interesting experiences: Satoshi and Pikachu show their kids Pokemon-battling (getting involved in a World Coronation Series ranking match along the way), and Go goes on a Pokemon-catching spree with his duo. Trouble strikes when Rocket-Dan try to steal Pikachu, Rabbifuto and Wanpachi using a fake Lugia.

At the Kuchiba City Pokémon Center while Pikachu is being treated, a Pokémon egg from the Sinnoh Region that hasn't been willing to hatch yet reacts to Satoshi, and Joy-san entrusts the egg to him. That night at the Sakuragi Institute, the egg hatches to reveal a Riolu, who runs away and starts attacking wild Pokémon indiscriminately, including an Iwark that may be too strong for Riolu unless Satoshi and Pikachu can get there in time.

Satoshi and Go have gone to the Hoenn Region to investigate the phenomenon that causes Agehunt to migrate, but the rift between Rabbifuto and Go seems to be getting worse and worse to the point where Rabbifuto is refusing to listen to Go and doesn't even seem to like him! While they're all staying at the Pokémon Center, Rabifuto keeps sneaking out at night. Satoshi, Pikachu and Go follow him to an underground Pokémon Dance Club where Rabbifuto seems to be quite the dance star and appears quite happy. Believing that Rabbifuto would be better off without him, Go decides to release Rabbifuto, but this may be the worst decision he's ever made.

Now Musashi, Kojiro, Nyarth and Sonans have to work with Satoshi and Go, who are also in Sinnoh, to stop Matori without anyone finding out who they are or violating their orders from Headquarters.

During the competition while Go, as usual, is out catching new Pokémon, Satoshi comes face to face in a World Coronation Series Ranking Match with an old friend and opponent: Gym Leader Corni and her Lucario! It's a two-on-two battle, with Satoshi's Gangar and Kairyu vs. Corni's Kojondo and Lucario! Satoshi and his new team of Pokémon must find a way to battle through and emerge victorious, while Go sees Mega-Evolution for the first time.
