Katekhi Church

The Katekhi Church (Georgian: კატეხის ეკლესია; Azerbaijani: Katex kilsəsi) is a Georgian Orthodox Church located in the village of Katex of Balakan District, northwestern Azerbaijan, on the border with Georgia. It was constructed before 697, probably by orders of Archil of Kakheti. Church stayed under Kakhetian prince-bishopric, until it was annexed to Heretian kingdom.[1] Church was destrpued after invasion of Arab emir, until 1040, when Catholicos-Patriarch Melchizedek I of Georgia renovated it, and asked Bagrat IV of Georgia to confirm its jurisdiction over church and surrounding territory.
