Dialects of Kannada proper fall into four groups:[2]
- Standard or Text Book Kannada dialect
This kannada is used in Books, Cinema, etc
- Coastal dialects
- Mangalore Kannada, Halakki, Barkur, Havyaka, Kundagannada, Sirsi Kannada, Ankola Kannada, Komarpant, Malenadu Kannada.
- Northern Dialects
- Dharwad Kannada, Gulbarga Kannada, Vijayapura Kannada
- South-eastern
- Arebhashe, Tiptur Kannada, Rabakavi, Nanjangudu Kannada
- South Karnataka
- Aruvu, Bangalore Kannada, Soliga, Mandya kannada, Banakal
Kannada languages
Badagu is the Kannada-related language spoken by the Badaga community in the Nilgiri region in Tamil Nadu.[3]
