KRKS-FM

KRKS-FM (94.7 MHz) is a commercial radio station licensed to Lafayette, Colorado, and serving the Denver-Boulder market and the Denver metropolitan area. The station is owned and operated by the Salem Media Group and it airs a Christian talk and teaching radio format. Its studios and offices are located on South Vaughn Way in Aurora, and the transmitter is located on Lee Hill, northwest of Boulder.[1] KRKS-FM is simulcast with co-owned AM 990 KRKS. Together, they are known as "94.7 The Word."

Programming

Programming on KRKS-AM-FM includes "Insight for Living with Chuck Swindoll," "Grace to You with John MacArthur," "Focus on the Family with Jim Daly" and "In Touch with Dr. Charles Stanley." Most shows are paid brokered programming with the hosts asking for donations to support their ministry.

History

On March 15, 1971, the station signed on as KBVL, originally licensed to Boulder and owned by the Boulder Radio Company.[2] KBVL was the FM counterpart to AM 1490 KBOL (now KCFC). At first, KBVL broadcast an easy listening/middle of the road format but later switched to classical music.

In the mid-1980s, the station was acquired by Sterling Radio and a classic rock format began. On April 14, 1988, Adams Communications assumed control of KBVL from Sterling Radio, with the station becoming KHIH, "Smooth Jazz 94-7". The station used the syndicated "Wave" format that had been successful on KTWV/Los Angeles.[3][4]

Noble Communications purchased KHIH in 1993. In December of that year, Salem Communications (later known as the Salem Media Group) purchased KHIH from Noble for $5 million.[5] Salem mostly operates Christian stations, so it dropped the Smooth Jazz format that month for its current religious format (the smooth jazz format would move to KHOW-FM).

In the early 2010s, the station switched its city of license from Boulder to Lafayette, putting it a bit closer to Denver, although the transmitter remains northwest of Boulder, where it had been. The station was rebranded as "94.7 FM The Word" in January 2017.
