Jhanji

Jhanji is a small semi rural area situated both in Sivasagar and Jorhat district. The river Jhanji or Jaji divides these two districts.

History

The river Jhanji is famous from the time of Ahom kingdom in Assam.It physically divides Jorhat and Sivasagar districts of Assam.The word Jhanji is an Assamese compound word.In Assamese,Jhanji means "jhanjori kohiyua nodi"; the river which flows waste products of flood.In the time of flood it flows a high amount of things like trees,mud,etc.So it was named as Jhanji

In lots of old bihu songs,The jhanji river was mentioned.Jibon Jaji noi,Jhanji noi eribo nuwaru etc are some example.Tamulichiga,Bhogamukh,Khonamukh are three famous place in the bank of jhanji river,which was named after the river Jhanji.

Transport

The National Highway 37 passes through Jhanji and connects it to the other places of Assam. Jorhat Airport is the nearest airport from Jhanji. The National Highway 61 (India) runs from Kohima, the capital of the state of Nagaland and ends at Jhanji. [1]

Politics

Jhanji is part of the 103rd Amguri Legislative Assembly. Jhanji is part of the Jorhat (Lok Sabha constituency).[2]
