Jarmundi

Jarmundi is a community development block (CD) that forms an administrative division in Dumka district, Jharkhand state, India. It is located 27 km (17 mi) from Dumka, the district headquarters.

Geography

Jarmundi, the eponymous community development block headquarters, is located at 24°23′31″N 87°3′23″E.[1]

Demographics

As per 2011 Census of India Jarmundi had a total population of 168,163, all of which were rural. There were 84,341 (50%) males and 82,822 (50%) females. Scheduled Castes numbered 11,688 and Scheduled Tribes numbered 44,796. Population below 6 years was 29,973.[2]

Hindi and Santali are languages spoken in the region.

Literacy

As per 2011 census the total number of literates in Jarmundi was 80,233 (58.06% of the population over 6 years) out of which 50,701 (63%) were males and 29,528 (37%) were females.[2]

As per 2011 census, literacy in Dumka district was 61.02.[3] Literacy in Jharkhand (for population over 7 years) was 66.41% in 2011.[4] Literacy in India in 2011 was 74.04%.[5]

Transport

The Jasidih–Dumka–Rampurhat railway line is fully operational from June 2015. The Jasidih-Dumka sector was operational from 2011. There is a railway station at Basukinath.[6][7]

Culture

Hindus in large numbers gather at Basukuinath temple to worship Lord Shiva.[8]
