Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation

The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) is the chief governing body of Visakhapatnam city. Its jurisdiction encompasses an area of 688.96 km2 (266.01 sq mi).[2][3] It is also part of the planning body of the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority.[4] G. Srijana is the present municipal commissioner of the city.[5]

History

Visakhapatnam is one of the earliest municipality in the region. It was setup as a municipality in 1858 later upgraded as corporation in 1979. On 21 November 2005 Government of Andhra Pradesh has released a GO to create a Greater Municipal Corporation and it was first Greater municipal corporation in the state of Andhra Pradesh.[6][7] The Anakapalli and the Bheemili municipalities were incorporated.[8]

The area of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation is 688.96 km2 (266.01 sq mi).[2] The corporation is administered by an elected body headed by the mayor.

The corporation has a total of 95,580 street lights under its administration.[9]
