Fuji Dream Airlines

Fuji Dream Airlines Co., Ltd. (FDA) (株式会社フジ ドリーム エアラインズ, Kabushiki-gaisha Fuji Dorīmu Earainzu) is a domestic airline headquartered in Makinohara, Shizuoka, Japan,[1] with its main hub at Shizuoka Airport and Nagoya Airfield. The airline commenced operations on July 23, 2009, from its home town of Shizuoka.

History

Fuji Dream Airlines (FDA) was established on June 24, 2008, by the present President and CEO Yohei Suzuki, with an initial capital of ¥450 million. The airline is a wholly owned subsidiary of Suzuyo & Co., Ltd., whose core business include international and domestic freight forwarding, port operations and customs brokerage; and warehousing and distribution.[1][2]

FDA's parent Suzuyo & Co., Ltd. signed a purchase agreement with Embraer on November 30, 2007, for two Embraer 170 E-Jets, with a purchase right to acquire one additional aircraft. The contract value was estimated to be approximately US$87 million, if the purchase right is exercised. At that time, the yet-to-be-established airline is Embraer's second customer in Japan.[3][4] On October 27, 2008, Embraer received the type certification from the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) to operate the Embraer 170 E-Jets in Japan and the airline received its first Embraer 170 narrow-body aircraft on February 20, 2009. The new aircraft is configured with 76 seats in a single-class layout.[5][6][7] On June 15, 2009, the contract between Embraer and the airline was amended, paving the way for the airline to acquire the 84-seat Embraer 175, which was delivered in January 2010.[8][9][10] On October 22, 2010, a new contract between Embraer and the airline was signed for the purchase of one 84-seat plus one optional Embraer 175.

The airline inaugurated its first flight on July 23, 2009. Its operations include two daily flights to Komatsu and one daily flight each to Kagoshima and Kumamoto, from its home town of Shizuoka.[11] On April 1, 2010, the airline commenced three daily flights to Fukuoka and one daily flight to Sapporo.[12]

Fuji Dream Airlines (FDA), of Japan, has signed a contract for two EMBRAER 175 jets, in a ceremony held at the headquarters of the airlines’ parent company, Suzuyo Corp. in Shimizu, Japan. The total value of the deal is USD 81.6 million, at list price, which will be included in Embraer's fourth quarter of 2012 backlog. Both aircraft will be configured in a single-class layout with 84 seats. This order brings the total number of aircraft in the airline's all-E-Jet fleet to eight.[13]

Services

In-flight catering

Bottled cold green tea and tea cakes are available on flights between Shizuoka and Komatsu. Coffee, Japanese green tea, apple juice, mineral water and tea cakes are available on all other flights.[21]

In-flight entertainment

The airline's inflight magazine Dream 3776 is available on board. Its name originates from the word "dream" and Mount Fuji's 3,776 m (12,388 ft) elevation.[22]
