Edenhope, Victoria

Edenhope is a town in Victoria, Australia. It is located on the Wimmera Highway, 30 kilometres from the South Australian border, in the Shire of West Wimmera local government area. At the 2016 census Edenhope had a population of 946.[1]

The township of Edenhope was established some years later than nearby Apsley, the Post Office opening on 16 July 1864.[2]

The town sits on the shores of Lake Wallace, which is home to abundant waterbirds, and is a popular fishing and water sports destination. Lake Wallace is now filling again after the Australian drought, and the waterbird population is slowly increasing. On Lake Street in the grounds of the Secondary College, there is a cairn commemorating the first all-Aboriginal cricket team to go to England.

Edenhope has a horse racing club, the Edenhope Racing Club, which holds the Edenhope Cup meeting on the Labour Day weekend in March.[3] The Apsley Racing Club also hold their Cup meeting there in April.[4]

Golfers play at the course of the Edenhope Golf Club on Laidlaw Avenue.[5] Edenhope has a football club that merged with Apsley in 1999 that now competes in the Horsham District Football League but was formerly competing in the Kowree-Naracoorte-Tatiara Football League until 2006 then the Kowree-Naracoorte Football League until 1992 then the Kowree Football League until 1937. Edenhope’s best known footballers were Phil Carman a former player for the Collingwood Football Club, Melbourne Football Club, Essendon Football Club and North Melbourne Football Club, Don Dixon another former player for the Collingwood Football Club, Graeme Mackenzie and Max Galpin both former players for the Fitzroy Football Club, Bruce Greenhill a former player of the Footscray Football Club, brothers Tom and Oscar McDonald now currently playing for the Melbourne Football Club and Alex Forster a former player at the Fremantle Football Club. In this town, you can find one motel Edanhope Motor Inn to stay with the restaurant.

Edenhope hosts Henley on Lake Wallace on the second Saturday in February.
