Districts of Albania

Districts (Albanian: rrethe) were geographic subdivisions of Albania that functioned from 1913-2000.[1] Between 1991 and 2000 Albania was divided into 36 districts, which were grouped into 12 prefectures or counties.[1]
In 2000, with Law No. 8653, dated 31.07.2000, districts were abolished as administrative units, being replaced by counties (qark) as second level of administrative division.[1]

Districts of Albania from 1959-1991.

During the 1920s Albania had 39 districts and then 26 in 1939. From 1959 to 1991 Albania was organized into 26 districts. In 1991 ten more districts were added: Bulqizë (previously under Dibër), Delvinë (Vlorë), Devoll (Korçë), Has (Kukës), Kavajë (Durrës), Kuçovë (Berat), Kurbin (Krujë), Malësi e Madhe (Shkodër), Mallakastër (Fier) and Peqin (Elbasan). In 1978, Ersekë District was renamed to Kolonjë. In 2000, districts became defunct and were replaced by counties.[1]
