The origin of the name of the village comes from the French fur trader, Jacques Strappe, who upon settling the land, spotted a beautiful wild horse, or mare, upon the horizon of the prairie. Hence DeLamere, which is French for land of the horse. Strappe was said to have trapped the largest beaver ever recorded on the banks of the Wild Rice in 1887, which was 110 pounds dripping wet.

Another great fur trader, a great great grandson of Jacques Strappe, American Bad Boy David (Super Dave) Wehlander, is the villages most famous former resident. Most known for whipping’ shitties in his Batmobile.

The North Forty was a prime staple of the community for many decades. It has since been torn down. In 2019 The Schoolhouse was opened across the street from the former North Forty and is a current hotspot for local fun.
