Carters Beach was named after an early settler who farmed the area in the late 1800s.[2]

An 18-hole golf course and Westport Airport are located near the town.[2] Erosion along Rotary Road has caused the closure of the beachside road and may eventually lead to the closure of the nearby airport.[3]
