Butler Township was organized in 1883, and named for Stephen Butler, a county official.[3]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 35.9 square miles (93 km2), of which 35.1 square miles (91 km2) of it is land and 0.8 square miles (2.1 km2) of it (2.17%) is water.

Demographics

At the 2000 census there were 315 people in 98 households, including 83 families, in the township. The population density was 9.0 people per square mile (3.5/km²). There were 119 housing units at an average density of 3.4/sq mi (1.3/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 96.19% White, 0.95% Pacific Islander, 2.54% from other races, and 0.32% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.54%.[1]

Of the 98 households 48.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 82.7% were married couples living together, 2.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 14.3% were non-families. 14.3% of households were one person and 9.2% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 3.21 and the average family size was 3.54.

The age distribution was 36.8% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 15.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% 65 or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 112.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 114.0 males.

The median household income was $29,479 and the median family income was $31,607. Males had a median income of $23,594 versus $15,938 for females. The per capita income for the township was $10,353. About 11.5% of families and 14.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 12.5% of those under age 18 and 5.8% of those age 65 or over.
