Bluffton Township was organized in 1878 and named for the bluffs on the Leaf River.[3]

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 33.0 square miles (85 km2), of which 33.0 square miles (85 km2) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) of it (0.09%) is water.

Demographics

At the 2000 census there were 474 people in 168 households, including 131 families, in the township. The population density was 14.4 people per square mile (5.6/km²). There were 180 housing units at an average density of 5.5/sq mi (2.1/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 99.16% White, 0.21% Asian, 0.21% from other races, and 0.42% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.42%.[1]

Of the 168 households 39.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.3% were married couples living together, 5.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.0% were non-families. 16.1% of households were one person and 7.7% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.19.

The age distribution was 28.9% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 24.7% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% 65 or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 111.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 114.6 males.

The median household income was $45,179 and the median family income was $48,611. Males had a median income of $28,897 versus $17,143 for females. The per capita income for the township was $18,379. About 5.8% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.3% of those under age 18 and 12.2% of those age 65 or over.
