Brie (Breton: Brev, Gallo: Beriy) is a commune in the Ille-et-Vilaine department in Brittany in northwestern France.

History

The name of the locality is attested in Plebs Beria forms in 1096, Berie in 1240, Beria in 1516[2] Word of Celtic origin briva or brieria "bridge", or Gallic briga, "fortified height".

Heraldry

The Coat of Arms shows Argent with three crenellated fasces of sand. The official status of the coat of arms remains to be determined.

Demographics

The evolution of the number of inhabitants is known through the population censuses carried out in the commune since 1793. From 1 January 2009, the legal populations of the communes are published annually in the framework of a census which is now based on An annual information gathering, covering successively all the communal territories during a period of five years. In 2014, the commune had 851 inhabitants, an increase of 6.51% compared to 2009 (Ille-et-Vilaine: 5.31%, France excluding Mayotte: 2.49%).

Inhabitants of Brie are called Briens in French.
