Bamboo Airways

Bamboo Airways JSC,[8] operating as Bamboo Airways, is a Vietnamese leisure airline owned by the FLC Group, registered in Quy Nhon, Vietnam, with a head office in Cầu Giấy District, Hanoi.[1] The airline was established with a charter capital of US$56.52 million.[9] The carrier started operations in January 2019, with the strategy of become a 5-Star airline.[10]

In March 2018, a total worth of up to $3.1 billion US dollars agreement between FLC Group and Airbus Group was sign to purchase 24 aircraft Airbus A321neo which was witnessed by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and French Parliamentary President François de Rugy.[11]

Following, on June 25 2018, Bamboo airways, FLC Group officially signed an agreement with Boeing in Washington, D.C. to make an order of 20 new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft with a total worth of US $5.6 billion US dollars in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue, with the purpose of opening Vietnam-United States and Vietnam-Europe direct flights.[12][13]

History

The airline was founded in 2017 and submitted its request to the Vietnamese prime minister for approval.[14] Aimed at hiring up to 600 employees, personnel recruitment began in April 2018.[15] The airline's AOC was granted on 9 July 2018. Bamboo Airways subsequently passed the five stages for certification required by Vietnam's Civil Aviation Authority.[16] After reviewing the airline's financial structure and business plan the Ministry of Transport issued an aviation license in November 2018.[17]

Operations started on 16 January 2019, with a leased Airbus A320 linking Ho Chi Minh City with Hanoi.[19]

In March 2018, Bamboo Airways signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Airbus for up to 24 Airbus A321neos.[15][22] A commitment for 20 Boeing 787-9s was signed in June 2018 with Boeing, with the airline completing the deposit requirement to reserve these aircraft.[15][46] The Airbus aircraft will be fitted with business and economy class, whereas the Dreamliners will be fitted with first, business and economy class.[15]

The carrier inducted its first aircraft, an Airbus A319-100, in December 2018.[47] The same month, Bamboo Airways took delivery of its first A321neo, on lease from GECAS.[16]

The airline started operations with aircraft on lease from third party lessors before taking delivery of the aircraft from Airbus.[48]
