According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.2 square miles (91.1 km²), of which, 35.1 square miles (91.0 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km²) of it (0.17%) is water.

At the 2000 census there were 591 people in 224 households, including 172 families, in the town. The population density was 16.8 people per square mile (6.5/km²). There were 271 housing units at an average density of 7.7 per square mile (3.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 92.55% White, 3.89% Native American, 0.85% Asian, 0.17% from other races, and 2.54% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.02%.[2]

Of the 224 households 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.4% were married couples living together, 8.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.2% were non-families. 18.3% of households were one person and 8.9% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 2.98.

The age distribution was 26.7% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 26.9% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% 65 or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 111.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 108.2 males.

The median household income was $37,663 and the median family income was $39,022. Males had a median income of $25,500 versus $21,964 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,893. About 9.1% of families and 16.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.1% of those under age 18 and 15.2% of those age 65 or over.
