Notes:
  1. Due to the coronavirus pandemic in Japan, the Japan Football Association reduced the number of participating teams in the 2020 Emperor's Cup, with the only two professional teams participating being the 2020 J1 League champions and runners-up. As they are the only two participating teams which can pass the club licensing requirements for the AFC Champions League, regardless of the cup winners, the league runners-up and 3rd place will qualify as Japan 2 and Japan 3 respectively (AFC Champions League group stage), and the 4th place will qualify as Japan 4 (AFC Champions League qualifying play-offs).
  2. Only teams that hold a J2 licence are eligible for promotion.
