2020 Maine referendums
Two referendums were placed on the statewide ballot in Maine in 2020. Both were citizen initiated proposals.
One was a special referendum election held on March 3, 2020, in conjunction with the Democratic and Republican primaries:
- Repeal of vaccination law: This was a people's veto referendum that sought to repeal a law passed by the Maine Legislature that eliminated all non-medical exemptions to child vaccination requirements. The veto effort failed by a large margin. [1]
A regularly scheduled referendum election will be held on November 3, 2020, in conjunction with elections for federal and state offices, which covers:
- Preventing construction of a power line corridor: This proposal seeks to force the Maine Public Utilities Commission to declare that construction of a new power line to bring Hydro-Quebec hydropower from Canada to Massachusetts for the New England energy grid is not in the public interest, which would prevent its construction.
