Overview
Preseason (until June)
On 31 December 2019, Wanda Group announced disagreement with local government upon the ownership of the club since the 2017 season, however the issue was reported solved as of 17 January 2020.
The team started winter training on 11 January in Xiamen. They officially switched to new team name Dalian Professional Football Club (Chinese: 大连人职业足球俱乐部) or Dalian Pro F.C. (Chinese: 大连人) for short on 21 January, and came up with a new emblem design featuring vintage Dalian Wanda F.C. logo.[1]
Tong Lei joined from Zhejiang Greentown. Wang Xianjun, being absent for the entire 2019 season due to transfer disagreement, reappeared in the squad. Qin Sheng and Zhao Mingjian left for Shanghai Shenhua.
Secondary pre-season training in Marbella, Spain was scheduled to began on 28 January, but the flight was cancelled due to heavy fog, and was rearranged on 31 January. As the 2020 Chinese Super League would be postponed due to the corona virus epidemic, Dalian Pro moved to Pinatar Arena in Murcia for an extended stay and training abroad on 20 February.[2] Since 9 March, they moved further to Benidorm.[3]
A few players from Wanda's overseas youth training program trained with the team in Spain, while Benitez signed several with national youth team experience. Carrasco rejoined Atletico Madrid on a half-season loan on 31 January.[4]
Dalian Pro relocated their home stadium to Jinzhou Stadium this season. As one of the holding cities of the 2021 FIFA Club World Cup, Dalian Sports Center was put under refit to meet FIFA's requirements.[5]
As the corona virus started to spread in Spain and Europe, while situation within China was significantly improved, Dalian Pro managed to fly back to China. The team kept low profile about the return trip, but it was reported that a Klasjet aircraft was hired, flying via Vilnius, Lithuania and Novosibirsk, Russia, to reach Dalian directly.[6][7] Benitez with two Swedish players flew to Hong Kong for visas,[8] as China suspended the entry for most foreigners due to the pandemic.[9] On 11 June, Dalian Pro managed to obtain visas for Benitez, Danielson, Larsson and Rondon, and they arrived in Dalian directly via VistaJet before the strict policy was cancelled,[10] while many foreign players and staff of CSL teams were still abroad.[11]
On 30 May, Tao Qianglong with 5 other players went out for drinking during the training of China U-19 national team, which broke the team regulation. They received 6-month suspension from domestic games, and was banned from China national teams.[12] Dalian Pro downgraded him to the reserve team.[13]
