2020 Campeonato Pernambucano

The 2020 Campeonato Pernambucano da Série A1 (officially the Campeonato Pernambucano estadium.bet 2020 for sponsorship reasons)[1] is the 106th edition of the state championship of Pernambuco organized by FPF. The championship began on 18 January and will end on TBA.

Sport are the defending champions.

The champions will qualify for the 2021 Copa do Brasil and 2021 Copa do Nordeste. The runners-up and the best placed team in the first stage not already qualified will qualify for 2021 Copa do Brasil.

On 14 March 2020, FPF announced that all the matches of Campeonato Pernambucano must be played behind closed doors to prevent the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19.[2] Consequently, the match Santa Cruz v Decisão played on 15 March 2020 was played behind closed doors. On 16 March 2020, FPF announced the suspension of the tournament.[3]

Ten teams are competing, eight returning from the 2019 and two promoted from the 2019 Pernambucano A2 Championship: Decisão and Retrô.[4]

First stage

In the first stage, each team will play the other nine teams in a single round-robin tournament. The teams will be ranked according to points (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for a loss). If tie on points, the following criteria will be used to determine the ranking: 1. Wins; 2. Goal difference; 3. Goals scored; 4. Fewest red cards; 5. Fewest yellow cards; 6. Draw in the headquarters of the FPF.[14]

Top two teams will advance to the semi-finals of the final stages, while teams from third to sixth places will advance to the quarter-finals. The four teams with the lowest number of points will play a relegation stage.[15]

Best team not qualified for the finals will qualify for 2021 Copa do Brasil. Top three teams not already qualified for 2021 Série A, Série B or Série C will qualify for 2021 Série D.

Relegation stage

In the relegation stage each team will play the other three teams in a single round-robin tournament with the higher-seeded team hosting the match. The two teams with the lowest number of points will be relegated to the 2021 Campeonato Pernambucano A2. Final stages

Starting from the quarter-finals, the teams will play a single-elimination tournament with the following rules:[14]

  • Quarter-finals and semi-finals will be played on a single-leg basis, with the higher-seeded team hosting the leg.
  • Finals will be played on a home-and-away two-legged basis, with the higher-seeded team hosting the second leg.
  • Extra time will not be played and away goals rule will not be used in final stages.
  • Third place match will not be played.
