Summary

World record holder and defending champion Kevin Mayer was the obvious favorite.

Decathletes know their best performances and how they perform relative to their bests defines their success towards the ultimate point total. While it was no surprise Damian Warner was the fastest in the 100 metres, a tick ahead of his Canadian teammate Pierce LePage, Mayer ran his personal best. The Canadians remained one-two in the long jump, but Mayer jumped his season best. Then Mayer threw the best in the shot put, his personal best ahead of Lindon Victor. Maicel Uibo gained big points in the high jump, but Mayer jumped his season best. Again Warner and LePage setting a personal best led the 400 to retain the same order on top of the standings after day one, but Mayer ran a season best. Warner had the lead, but only one season's best in the mix. Day two is Mayer's strength.

The speedy Warner won the 110 hurdles, with Mayer second but something wasn't right when he crossed the finish line. Still Mayer moved back into the lead with a solid discus, while Victor disappeared. In the pole vault, Mayer came down the runway on his first attempt and just kept going into the pit without jumping. He stood on the pit and blew a kiss to the crowd. His day was done.[2] The pole vault saw lots of readjusting of the scoreboard as LePage took over the lead, Ilya Shkurenyov moved into second and Uibo's best vault of the competition put him into third. Slowly rising through the standings, World U-20 record holder Niklas Kaul got out of double digits in the discus and a new personal best vault launched him into sixth place. In the javelin throw, Kaul threw a Championship Decathlon Best 79.05 m (259 ft 4 in) on his second attempt. That throw ranks him #69 in the world against full time javelin throwers. By comparison, Uibo was third place in the javelin with a 63.83m and that moved him into first place, yet Kaul gained 232 points on Uibo and was now only 19 points behind Uibo, with Warner in second just 4 points ahead of Kaul. It made the 1500 very interesting.

Protecting the lead, Warner and Uibo went to the front. Starting cautiously, Kaul waited behind them. That lasted 600 metres, then Kaul eased into the lead. Warner faded, essentially conceding gold and silver, but Uibo went with Kaul, looking squarely at the back of his shoulder-blades. This pace was unfamiliar territory for Uibo, not for Kaul. Over the next lap, the gap grew. Contact lost. Kaul had a lap to celebrate his coronation as the new World Champion.
