Zartaj Gul Wazir (Urdu: زرتاج گل وزیر‬‎) is a Pakistani politician who is the current Minister of State for Climate Change, in office since 5 October 2018. She has been a member of the National Assembly of Pakistan since August 2018.

Early life and education

Wazir hails from North Waziristan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa[1] and comes from a middle class Wazir family having no political background.[2]

She obtained her early education in her native town Bannu and Miramshah before moving to Lahore with her family.[2] She attended Queen Mary College for her undergraduate studies and then National College of Arts for her postgraduate studies.[1] She did Textile Designing from National College of Arts.[2]

After completing her education, she joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)[3] and became a volunteer with Insaf Student Forum (ISF) in 2005.[2]

She moved to Dera Ghazi Khan after getting married in 2010 and worked as a member for ISF and then as a member of PTI’s core committee and central deputy information secretary.[2]

Political career

She ran for the seat of the National Assembly of Pakistan as a candidate of PTI from Constituency NA-172 (Dera Ghazi Khan-II) in Pakistani general election, 2013 but was unsuccessful.[3] She received 38,643 votes and lost the seat to Hafiz Abdul Kareem.[4]

She was elected to the National Assembly as a candidate of PTI from NA-191 (Dera Ghazi Khan-III) in Pakistani general election, 2018.[5][6] She received 79,817 votes and defeated Awais Leghari.[7]

On 5 October 2018, she was inducted into the federal cabinet of Prime Minister Imran Khan[8] and was appointed as Minister of State for Climate Change.[9]
