Zakaria of Panaskerti

Zachariah Panaskerteli (Georgian: ზაქარია ფანასკერტელი; Zachariah of Panaskerti) was a 12th-13th century Georgian nobleman and politician, Zachariah belonged to the Panaskerteli branch of the Aspanidze family and owned estates in Tao-Klarjeit.

Life

In 1180's He used to be vassal of Guzan Abulasanisdze, ruler of Tao-Klarjeti. The turning point in Zachariah's fortune came with Guzan's rebellion against Queen Tamar, Zachariah remained loyal to the Queen and together with some other nobles, put down in 1192 the revolt. For this he was kindly rewarded; he was given Panaskerti to secure frontier borders in Tao-Klarjeti. The new froentier duchy comprised areas of Shavsheti, Klarjeti, Tao and Speri.

His descendant, Taqa Panaskerteli, Duke of Panaskerti, defeated the Turkomans invading Georgia in about 1302 at Tortomi Castle.[1]
