Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA) is a health care network operating hospitals in remote communities along James Bay in Northern Ontario, Canada.
History
Created in October 2010, WAHA merged two existing hospitals, Weeneebayko Health Ahtuskaywin and James Bay General Hospital along with a number of smaller health clinics.
Locations
Service area of WAHA consists of the Town of Moosonee, Fort Albany First Nation, Attawapiskat First Nation, Kashechewan First Nation, Weenusk First Nation, as well as Moose Factory.
Moose Factory
Weeneebayko Health Ahtuskaywin was the successor to Moose Factory General Hospital (c. 1966) and Moose Factory Indian and Inuit Hospital (c. 1950). Weeneebayko Health Ahtuskaywin was a federal funded hospital under Health Canada, where as most hospitals in Ontario are provincially funded. The Moose Factory site has 37 beds with services like acute care, alternative care, emergency services, mental health, general surgery, family medicine.[1]
Moosonee
Provincially run James Bay General Hospital (c. 1969) replaced earlier hospitals run by the Roman Catholic Church[1] and operated satellite locations in remote areas to the northwest:
- Attawapiskat (1985)
- Fort Albany (1987)
- Moosonee - new location (1993)
Moosonee Health Centre has succeeded James Bay General providing 24/7 emergency care, outpatient services and weekday clinics with doctors from Moose Factory.[1] The medical centre is located at 5 Percy's Way and administration offices at 78 Feurguson Road. The old hospital at 5 First Street is now James Bay Outdoors.
Fort Albany
Opened in 1987 as a satellite site of James Bay General, Fort Albany Hospital has 17 beds providing 27/7 care staffed by registered nurses and consulting doctors in emergency room.[1]
Attawapiskat
Opened in 1985 as a satellite site of James Bay, Attawapiskat Hospital has 15 beds and provides similar care as in Fort Albany.[1]
Partnership Sites
WAHA has a partnership with Health Canada First Nation and Inuit Health Branch to provide basic care in two remote communities:[1]
- Kashechewan Nursing Station
- Peawanuck Nursing Station
Both sites are staffed by nurses and provide basic care for their respective communities.
Transfers
For more advance care requiring transfers to Moose Factory or further south (Timmins and District Hospital or Kingston General Hospital).
Moose Factory site has a helipad located on the south side of the hospital. All other locations require ambulance transfers by Weeneebayko Area Health Authority Paramedic Services to nearest airport with ORNGE helicopters or other aircraft will airlift patients onwards.
