Guirlain Désiré Wato Kuaté (born 19 September 1995) is a professional footballer who plays for Rovaniemen Palloseura as a midfielder.[1] He was born in Cameroon, and also holds Portuguese nationality. He previously played in Turkey with Akhisar Belediyespor, and in Greece for Asteras Tripoli and Trikala. He joined Dundee United in March 2017, playing with the club only for two months. After visiting Scotland Kuaté played 5 games in Liga Leumit club Hapoel Petah Tikva.
Playing career
Wato Kuaté was born in Douala, Cameroon, on 19 September 1995. He began his youth football career in Portugal with U.D. Leiria,[2] before joining AC Bellinzona in Switzerland. A successful trial led to him joining the Manchester City Academy in 2012.[3] While in England, Kuaté was also on trial with Barnsley in 2013. He signed for Akhisar Belediyespor in the Turkish Süper Lig during the January 2014 transfer window, after being released by Manchester City.[4] He made his professional debut for Akhisar on 8 March 2014 in a 6-1 defeat against Galatasaray.[5]
On 9 July 2015, Kuaté signed a four-year contract with Superleague Greece club Asteras Tripoli for an undisclosed fee. During his first year with Asteras, he was loaned to Football League club Trikala for six months, before returning to Asteras.[6][7]
Kuaté signed a short-term contract with Scottish Championship club Dundee United in March 2017.[8] He scored his first goal for the club in a Scottish Premiership promotion play-off match against Greenock Morton on 12 May 2017.[9] United manager Ray McKinnon criticised Kuaté after a subsequent play-off match against Hamilton Academical, during which Kuaté reacted angrily to being substituted. McKinnon publicly stated that Kuaté would not play for the club again, and he was subsequently released at the end of his contract.[10]
On 18 October 2017 signed to the Liga Leumit club Hapoel Petah Tikva.[11] After a short time spent in Israel, Kuaté transferred to Finnish Veikkausliiga club Rovaniemen Palloseura signing a one-year contract in March 2018.[12]
His contract with the Finnish club was terminated just four months later. RoPS Rovaniemi head coach Toni Koskela was quoted as saying, that in his own mind Kuaté became bigger than the rest of the team. "We were forced to make this decision [to terminate the contract], as his misbehavior was effecting already our game. Football is a team sport, and we need only those players, who are commited to the team both on and off the field." [13]
