Washington initiative 912 presidential tax return requirement

Initiative 912 is a proposed Initiative to the Legislature in 2018 that would require candidates for the office of U.S. President to release their personal federal income tax returns and business federal income tax returns for the most recent eight years to appear on the primary and general election ballots in Washington State, starting in 2020. [1]

Background

After Donald Trump became the first major party presidential candidate in over 40 years not to release his tax returns, groups in various states sought to force tax return release via legislation or ballot measures.[2] There are differences of opinion over a state's right to add additional qualifications to run for federal office.[3]

2017 campaign

Initiative 912 was filed by Susan Edwards on March 15, 2017. The language of the ballot measure summary is as follows:

This measure would require potential candidates for president of the United States to release to the public all pages of their personal and business federal income tax returns for the most recent eight years in order to qualify to appear on the ballot, or to be a write-in candidate, for a presidential primary or general election in Washington State.
