WBZC (88.9 FM) was a radio station broadcasting a AAA format, licensed to Pemberton, New Jersey, United States. The station served the Burlington County area. WBZC's frequency allocation was made possible after WXPN in nearby Philadelphia moved from 88.9 FM to its present frequency of 88.5 FM in 1991. WBZC began broadcasting in January 1995 and ceased transmission on January 18, 2018. The first program on the air was Sentimental Journey with Kevin Doherty, one of the station’s founding members.

WBZC is owned by Rowan College at Burlington County (RCBC).[1]

Programming

The station's signal reached much of central South Jersey and parts of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and Philadelphia. The station's main format was AAA with a focus on new alternative rock mixed with reggae, EDM, and classic rock. WBZC also broadcast Burlington County High School Football games.

WBZC was nominated for several awards including Best U.S. Dance station at the International Music Awards and became a six-time finalist at the Philadelphia Achievement In Radio Awards, where the station competed against major commercial stations. It had since shifted to a AAA presentation, with the Dance/EDM programming being reduced.

The FM station ceased broadcasting January 18, 2018. It has since been reborn as an Internet-only station, starting on Monday, January 21, called RCBC Radio.[2] What the future holds for the 88.9 signal and the 95.1 translator is currently unknown.

Transmitter and translators

In early 2007, the station completed a power upgrade, going from 7.5 kW vertical/350 watts horizontal to 10 kW vertical/470 watts horizontal, with a vertical directional antenna. The transmitter site was moved to a communications tower in Chatsworth, New Jersey, near the intersection of State Route 72 and County Route 563. In addition to the main transmitter, WBZC was relayed by two translators to widen its broadcast area; the W236AF translator operated at 95.1 MHz from atop the Burlington-Bristol Bridge. Translator W264BH at 100.7 MHz, which was sold shortly before WBZC ceased broadcasting, was located on the roof of Virtua Hospital in Mount Holly. A planned third translator in the Cinnaminson area was never built.
