The Vinod Gupta school of Management, IIT Kharagpur (VGSoM) is a public business school located in Kharagpur, West Bengal, India. It is the first business school to be established in an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). It is consistently ranked as one of the best business schools in India and the Asia-Pacific region.

The institute offers a two-year full-time residential Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme, a 3 years post graduate MBA degree(EMBA) course for working executives, an advanced programme in management leading to the award of a Ph.D. degree.

The foundation stone of the School building was laid in 1994 by the then president of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma.

History

Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSoM), Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur was established in 1993. The Vinod Gupta School of Management was set up as the first school of management within the IIT system.[3][4]

1993

Mr. Vinod Gupta, distinguished Alumnus of IIT Kharagpur and former CEO and Chairman of InfoGROUP (previously known as InfoUSA), gave a generous endowment of 2 million US Dollars to IIT Kharagpur for setting up a business school within the IIT system. Mr. Gupta's donation was matched by liberal support from the Government of India, and the first business school under the IIT system came up.

The first batch was inducted in 1993 with 13 students. The current building had not come up yet. Facilities of the neighbouring departments were used to hold the classes.

1994

The foundation stone of the School building was laid in 1994 by the then president of India, Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma. The construction of the new building started.

1996

The School moved to the new building (the current premises) in December, 1996.

1998

VGSoM started various short term industry liaison courses and conferences in an endeavour to establish strong institute-industry partnership.

2000

VGSoM tied up with the Royal Danish Embassy, Dhaka in 2000 to provide Management Development Programmes for mid-level managers in Bangladesh.

2004

VGSoM increased student intake for its flagship MBA course to 120.

2010

The Executive MBA (EMBA) programme was started for working executives. This is a unique programme spread over three years, with two years of weekend contact courses delivered simultaneously in the IIT Kharagpur campus in Kolkata and IIT Bhubaneswar campus in Bhubaneswar, and one year of project work undertaken on live problems in the industry.

2018

VGSoM, the first of its kind B-School in an IIT system has produced numerous stalwarts of the corporate arena both at national and international scales. This success of VGSoM has inspired the other IIT’s to follow suit and develop a B-school within their fold.This year. The Vinod Gupta School of Management, IIT Kharagpur walks towards the completion of its 25th year of being. 25 years of excellence! 25 years of service to the nation! And a treasure trove of memories to cherish. To mark this auspicious occasion, the VGSoM fraternity is happy to announce ‘Aahvaan’ – Silver Jubilee Celebrations 2018[5]

The Vinod Gupta School of Management was ranked seventh among management schools in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2018[7] also respectively fifteenth and sixteenth in 2016 and in 2017 by Business Today's "India's best B-schools 2016"[8] Business Today's "India's best B-schools 2017" [9][10]

Recognition

  • VGSoM was awarded the 18th Business School Affaire and Dewang Mehta Business School award for its outstanding contribution to higher education in India.[11]

Library

Students have access to the school's library and the Institute's Central Library, which is one of the largest libraries in Asia.[12] These two, between them, offer a collection of about 365,000 books, 1,500 journals, 1,700 CDs and videos and 44 national and international scholarly databases.All hostel rooms have internet nodes that connect to a 100 Mbit/s LAN.The school's own computer laboratory is equipped with hardware and software systems.

Hostel

VGSoM provides on-campus residential accommodation facility to all its students. The halls are not exclusively for VGSoM students but are shared with IIT, Kharagpur students from other courses. Hostels are provided for both boys and girls. All the hostels are provided with internet connectivity in each room for which the students have to pay a nominal but compulsory charge.[13]
