Vidyut Jammwal (born 10 December 1980) is an Indian film actor who predominantly works in Hindi films. He is also a trained martial artist[3], having learned Kalaripayattu since the age of three.[5] He is popularly known as "The New Age Action Hero of Bollywood".[6][7] He has also worked in Kollywood and Tollywood films.[8]

Early life

Jammwal was born in Jammu in a Rajput family. He was one of three children born to an Indian Army officer, and lived in various parts of India (owing to his father's transferable job)[9] and trained in Kalaripayattu in an ashram in Palakkad, Kerala since he was three years old, which was run by his mother.[10] He traveled to many countries training with martial artists in various forms, some of which find their base in Kalaripayattu.[10] After earning a degree in martial arts, Jammwal traveled to over 25 countries, where he performed in live action shows.[11] He participated as a contestant in Gladrags in the year 2000 and has been living in Mumbai ever since. He was a model in Delhi since 1996, but after a dismal career in modelling, landed his debut role in Shakti, a Telugu film. He later landed his first role in a Bollywood movie in Nishikant Kamat's Force after one audition.

Career

Given his elaborate expertise in the martial arts, he has committed himself to stunt and action training in the world of cinema. His first Bollywood project Force, a remake of the Tamil film Kaaka Kaaka, alongside John Abraham[12] did moderately well at the Box Office[13].

He subsequently played supporting roles in the Telugu films Shakti and Oosaravelli, both starring NTR.[14] In 2012, Jammwal made his debut in Tamil cinema with Billa II, as the antagonist opposite Ajith Kumar. For his role, he received critical appreciation.[15] He worked on another Tamil film Thuppakki, opposite actor Vijay which became a blockbuster.[16] He also received an award for the Best Actor in a Negative Role in SIIMA Awards for the film. He also played a supporting role in another Tamil film Anjaan, alongside Suriya.

In his next film Commando, he performed real-world combat-based action without the aid of stuntmen. The trailer received over a million hits within a week of launching.[17] The film received a mixed critical reception[18]. Noted critic Taran Adarsh mentioned in his review - "Commando clearly belongs to Vidyut and the liberty of watching him crushing everything and everyone in sight leaves you tongue-tied. By doing the stunts without a body double or cables, he fits into the definition of India's Next Gen action hero without a hitch. He's a fine actor too, although it's the action that takes precedence over histrionics here."[19]

Commando showcased internationally for the first time in July 2013 at the Fantasia Film Fest in Montreal,[20][21] followed by a screening at the Fantastic Fest[22][23][24] in Texas in September 2013. He received positive feedback from international media[25] and action directors, calling him India's answer to Bruce Lee and Tony Jaa.[26] He has been part of a number of popular lists, including Most Desirable,[27][28][29] Fittest men with Best Bodies,[30][31] and Sexiest Men Alive.[32]

After the success of Commando, he played a sharpshooter cop in Tigmanshu Dhulia's Bullett Raja. Known for his gritty and edgy cinematic style, Tigmanshu cast him once again for his next directorial venture,Yaara - a remake of the French film Les Lyonnais.[33][34] Yaara was one of three films Vidyut signed for – the other two being large format films by director Ram Madhvani, creating an aura similar to the Hollywood flick 300.[35]

More recently, he was seen starring as Chandru in the Tamil film Anjaan, directed by N Lingusamy, as a parallel lead to Suriya.[36]

He and his team of stunt men designed, choreographed and executed all his action sequences with him for all his films.[37]

In 2018, Jammwal will star opposite Shruti Haasan in Tigmanshu Dhulia's film Yaara. They are both also together for Mahesh Manjrekar's untitled drama as well.[38]

His workout regime combines martial arts training with various other elements of cardio vascular, weight and interval training.[57] More recently, Jammwal has adopted and added Anti Gravity Yoga and Suspension TRX to his intense workout regime.[58] Jammwal is a rock climber.[59][60]

Jammwal visited the Shaolin Temple in China.[61] His visit was meant to honour Bodhidharma, an Indian monk who is credited for teaching Indian combat forms and exercises to China, from which then kungfu was born.[62] Jammwal is also believed to have spent a week taking part in martial arts training at the temple.[63]
