Development

Varma is the Tamil remake of the Telugu film Arjun Reddy (2017) and is produced by Mukesh Mehta under E4 Entertainment. It is directed by Bala, and the dialogues were written by Raju Murugan.[3] M. Sukumar was selected to handle the cinematography.[4] Mehta said Varma would be 20 minutes shorter than the Telugu original.[5] Sathish Suriya was chosen as the film editor, after having earlier worked for Bala's Naachiyaar.[6]

Casting

Varma marks the acting debut of actor Vikram's son Dhruv Vikram.[3] It is also the debut for Kolkata-based model Megha, who plays the female lead.[7] Akash Premkumar was chosen to play the lead character's best friend Ashok.[8]

Filming

Principal photography began in early March 2018 at Kathmandu, Nepal,[3] and a week later, after completing the first schedule there, the crew shifted to Chennai for the second schedule.[9] Shooting was briefly stalled due to a strike of the Tamil Film Producers Council, but resumed in April after the strike ended.[10] For the final schedule, the team shifted to Tiruvannamalai.[8] Principal photography wrapped in September 2018.[11]

Soundtrack

The film will have Radhan as the music director, who earlier composed the soundtrack of the Telugu original.[12]

Release

Varma is expected to be released in November 2018.[5]
