Sandeep Reddy Vanga (born 25 December 1981) is an Indian director, screenwriter and dialogue writer. He made his directorial debut with the critically acclaimed Telugu-language blockbuster film Arjun Reddy.[1][2] He is remaking Arjun Reddy in Bollywood, with Shahid Kapoor in the lead.
Early life
Sandeep Vanga was born in Warangal, Telangana to Prabhakar Reddy and Sujatha. He has an elder brother, Pranay Reddy Vanga, an IT professional settled in the US. He did his schooling from Platinum Jubilee High School, Warangal, an Agha Khan educational society school until 8th and moved to Hyderabad from 9th standard to 12th standard. He received his bachelor’s degree from SDM College of Medical Sciences, Dharwad. He was a movie buff from a young age and was passionate about films. While in 2nd-year physiotherapy, he was bored of the field and decided to pursue a career in filmmaking seriously after graduation.
After joining as an apprentice in Vizag, he decided to study filmmaking, and went to pursue at International Film School, Sydney (now known as AFTT - Academy of Film, Theatre & Television), Australia.[3][4] He has an elder brother, Pranay Reddy Vanga, who is a software engineer working for FannieMae in United States of America and has produced the film Arjun Reddy.
Career
Early work
Sandeep worked as an apprentice for the film Manasu Maata Vinadhu in 2005 for 25 days at Rushikonda Beach, Vizag. He worked for a few Tollywood films, including Kedi as an assistant director and "Malli Malli Idi Rani Roju" as Associate Director with Kranthi Madhav. He started writing the script for Sugar Factory for his directorial debut, but shelved it and started working for Arjun Reddy.
Arjun Reddy
He started writing the script for Arjun Reddy in 2013 and finished it in a year. He went to many producers, but they were not keen on bankrolling the project, as it was too bold. He was keen on casting Nithin and Ram Charan but did not work out. Producer, Swapna Dutt and Sharwanand showed interest to do the role. But due to his date problems.
He was introduced to Vijay Deverakonda by a common friend. He was very impressed with his look and was convinced that he found the protagonist for the powerful role. He cast him as the lead for his directorial debut, Arjun Reddy. No producers came forward to do this risque film. So, he, his brother and father started a company "Bhadrakali Pictures" and produced the film themselves. The film was released on 25 August 2017 and became a blockbuster hit with rave reviews. The entire Telugu film fraternity praised Sandeep's work with his project. The film, produced on a budget of ₹5 crores, went on to gross more than INR ₹50 crores (USD $8 million) at the box office.
Sandeep spent a week working on English subtitles for the film, just to capture the essence of the words, and to convey emotions of the film, to non-Telugu language audience.[5]
Controversy
The film ran into trouble with censor board for its depiction of smoking and narcotic drug use. It also created furor for its kissing scenes and also for a movie poster which was approved by Telangana Film Chamber.
Remake
Arjun Reddy is to be remade in different Indian languages, including Kannada, Tamil and Hindi.
Future films
With Mahesh Babu
Sandeep will be directing a romantic entertainer with Mahesh Babu in 2019, produced by K S Rama Rao, under the production of Creative Commercials.[6][7] It will be one of the costliest films in Tollywood. The hunt for the leading lady is going on.The film is not yet finalized.
Bollywood
Sandeep Reddy is writing the script for the Hindi version of Arjun Reddy, with even bolder and hard-hitting story, to suit the Hindi audience. He signed up with the Kaminey fame energetic man Shahid Kapoor as Lead. The director described him as an actor with high inhibitions. Kiara Advani roped up for the role of the leading lady. The film is produced by Murad Khetani and Ashwin Warde, the rights to the original film were purchased for INR ₹1.5 crores (USD $1.1 million). The shooting will start in July 2018.
Personal life
Sandeep married Maneesha Reddy (Karuna) in 2014 and they have a son, Arjun (b.2016).
