Vadnagar Railway Station is a railway station in Mehsana district, Gujarat. Its code is VDG. It serves Vadnagar town. The station consists of 2 platforms. The platforms are well sheltered. The station is currently closed for track gauge conversion of Mahesana–Taranga Hill line.

History

As per the records available with Western Railway, train services through Vadnagar started as early as 2018(wrong date). A meter gauge line of about 30 kilometer long between Mehsana and Vadnagar (over 30 km) opened in 21 March 1887 and another 10 kilometer long line between Vadnagar and Kheralu in 12 December 1888.

The book titled Railways in India—a legend: origin & development (1880–1887), states the survey for the line from Mehsana to Vadnagar undertaken in May 1884 and construction completed in August 1886 and completed by March 1887. The survey and construction for line from Vadnagar to Kheralu in April 1887 and June 1887.

An article titled "The Company and its Early History", dated 1923[1] also states that these railway lines were built by Baroda state under the rule of the Gaikwads (also spelled as ‘Gaekwads’) who were first among the princely states to build their own railway network dating back to the 1860s. Baroda was rich in cotton and the Gaikwads saw an opportunity to supply okokokoomom cotton to markets in England during a disruption in supply that resulted from the American Civil War (1861–1865).

Another book titled "Shaping of Modern Gujarat" talks in detail of the railway lines laid in 1887 between Mehasana, Visnagar and Vadnagar and extended to Kheralu in 1888 and further extended till Taranga Hill in 1909.[2]

The station is currently closed for track gauge conversion of Mahesana–Taranga Hill line.
