Under the Silver Lake is a 2018 American neo-noir film written and directed by David Robert Mitchell. It stars Andrew Garfield, Riley Keough, and Topher Grace, and follows a man who sets out on a quest to find the woman he met the night before in his apartment complex's swimming pool after she goes missing.

The film had its world premiere at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival on May 15, 2018 and is scheduled to be released in the United States on December 7, 2018, by A24.

Plot

Sam, an affable but aimless young man, becomes an unwitting detective who quickly finds himself in over his head as he investigates the mysterious disappearance of his beautiful neighbor, with whom he has fallen in love. As he combs through Los Angeles searching for any kind of clues he can find, he stumbles upon a larger, more sinister conspiracy than he ever imagined, involving billionaires, celebrities, urban myths, and even pop culture as we know it.[1]

Cast

Production

In May 2016, Andrew Garfield and Dakota Johnson joined the cast of the film, with David Robert Mitchell directing the film, from a screenplay he also wrote. Michael De Luca, Adele Romanski, Jake Weiner, and Chris Bender will serve as producers.[2][3] In October 2016, Topher Grace and Riley Keough joined the cast of the film, the latter replacing Johnson.[4][5][6] In November 2016, Zosia Mamet, Jimmi Simpson, Patrick Fischler, Luke Baines, Callie Hernandez, Riki Lindhome and Don McManus joined the cast.[7] Composer Disasterpeace, who provided the original score for Mitchell's previous film It Follows, returned to write the music.[8]

Filming

Principal photography began on October 31, 2016.[9]

Release

In May 2016, A24 acquired U.S distribution rights to the film.[10] The film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 15, 2018.[11][12] The film was scheduled to be released on June 22, 2018,[13] but on June 4 was pushed back to December 7, 2018.[14]

Reception

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 61% based on 38 reviews, and an average rating of 6.2/10.[15] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 59 out of 100, based on 15 critics, indicating "generally mixed reviews".[16]
