Types of road

Roads have been adapted to a large range of structures and types in order to achieve a common goal of transportation under a large range of conditions. The specific purpose, mode of transport, and location of a road determine the characteristics it must have to maximize its usefulness. Following is one classification scheme. Generally private roads
Lower capacity highways
Higher capacity highways, sometimes with medians
Limited access grade-separated highways
Multi Modal
  • Multi-modal roads: a newer concept with lanes for different classes of traffic
