Tropic Skincare, often just referred to as Tropic, is a British skincare and cosmetics company. The company does research at its Surrey headquarters, where it designs, manufactures, markets, and distributes its products.[2]

History

Tropic was informally established in 2004, when founder Susan Ma aged 15, sold a single body care product in Greenwich market, inspired by her upbringing of Tropical North Queensland.[3] The company officially became incorporated in 2011.[4] After Susan Ma took part in the seventh series of The Apprentice, Alan Sugar invested to become a 50/50 partner in Tropic. In 2013, Tropic launched its Social Selling Business Platform with 400 founding sales people.[5] Since then, Tropic has increased its product range to include skincare, body care, hair care, sun care, tanning serums and products designed for men,[6] by introducing new ranges on a bi-annual basis.[7]

Business structure

Tropic uses a social selling business model, in which independent sales people, called “Ambassadors”, develop relationships with customers as part of the sales process through the means of “Pamper Experiences” where customers can try and experience products before purchasing. Ambassadors also attend commercial events and have personal web-shops, where products can be purchased online.[8] Since launching the initiative, Ambassador numbers have grown from 400 to more than 10,000.[9] Ambassadors are able to integrate this work with full-time employment, with the possibility to move up to executive levels that pay full-time salaries.[10]

Ingredients

Tropic's products are composed of naturally derived ingredients. Tropic's products do not contain parabens, alcohol, gluten, synthetic preservatives, or sodium lauryl sulfate. All products are vegan friendly,[11] and many contain essential oils such as bergamot oil, rosehip oil, and tea tree oil, in conjunction with aloe vera juice and shea butter which are also prevalent throughout the range.

Ethics

Tropic is certified by the Vegan Society,[12] PETA,[13] and Cruelty Free International.[14]

Awards

Tropic has received the Best Business Award 2016,[15] the 2017 Sunday Times Virgin Fast Track 100 Best Emerging Brand,[16] the Beauty Shortlist Award,[17] and 8 Stevie Awards including Fastest Growing Company of the Year.[18][19] In January 2018 Founder and CEO Susie Ma secured a spot on 2018 Forbes 30 Under 30 list.[20]
