Tonsley railway station is the terminus station of the Tonsley line.[1] Situated in the south-western Adelaide suburb of Mitchell Park, it is 13 kilometres from Adelaide station.

History

Tonsley station was opened in 1966. The station was formerly serviced by diesel railcars but is now serviced by electric railcars after the electrification of the Seaford and Tonsley lines in 2014.[2] Trains operate between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM on weekdays, with no weekend service.[1] The Station I serviced by a single track line which ends at Tonsley.

The Tonsley Railway Line was constructed in 1966 branching off from the Seaford (then Noarlunga Centre) Line at Ascot Park where Tonsley Trains divert off the Seaford Line onto the newly doubled section of track before it changes into a single track line before Mitchell Park.

As Part of the Flinders Link Project, the current Tonsley Railway Station will be demolished to allow for elevation of the track around 150m before the station.[3] The new elevated line will travel across Sturt Road and South Road to end up adjacent to the Flinders University and Medical Centre. This will allow for tertiary students to travel from Adelaide to Flinders University by rail rather than the bus routes.

The original plan featured the removal of the station and for Tonsley Station to be officially replaced by the new Flinders Station. However this plan was contested by local residents signing a petition to keep the Tonsley Railway Station.[3] The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure published a new plan featuring a newly constructed Tonsley Station 200 metres North of the current station being situated just prior to the start of the new flyover.[4] The project is set to be completed in mid 2019.[5]
