Thomas "Tom" White (1 August 1893 - 1927) was an English professional rugby league footballer of the 1900s, 1910s and 1920s. He played at representative level for Great Britain, and England, and at club level for Oldham, and St. Helens, as a wing, centre, stand-off/five-eighth, or scrum-half/halfback, i.e. number 2 or 5, 3 or 4, 6, or 7.[1]
Background
Tom White was born in Prescot, Lancashire, he was the manager of the St. Helens branch of Messrs. W & T Avery Ltd.'s Weights and Measures, he died aged 33 at home on Crab Street, St. Helens of a heart attack following an attempt to kick start his motorbike outside W & T Avery Ltd. on Claughton Street, St. Helens, Lancashire.
Playing career
International honours
Tom White won caps for England while at Oldham in 1908 against Wales, in 1910 against Wales (2 matches), in 1911 against Wales, and Australia,[2] and won a cap for Great Britain while at Oldham in 1908 against New Zealand.[3]
Championship appearances
Tom White played in Oldham's victory in the Championship during the 1904–05 season.[5]
Challenge Cup Final appearances
Tom White played right-centre, i.e. number 4, in St. Helens' 3-37 defeat by Huddersfield in the 1915 Challenge Cup Final during the 1914–15 season at Watersheddings, Oldham on Saturday 1 May 1915, in front of a crowd of 8,000.
County Cup Final appearances
Tom White played stand-off/five-eighth in Oldham's 9-10 defeat by Wigan in the 1908 Lancashire County Cup Final during the 1908–09 season at Wheater's Field, Broughton, Salford on Saturday 19 December 1908.[6]
