Thunderbirds Are Go is a British animated science fiction television programme produced by ITV Studios and Pukeko Pictures. It is a continuation of the 1960s television series Thunderbirds created by Gerry and Sylvia Anderson and follows the exploits of the Tracy family: five brothers who form the front-line of International Rescue, a specialist life-saving organisation equipped with technologically advanced crafts for sea, land, air and space rescue; central to these is a fleet of five vehicles named the Thunderbirds.

The programme premiered on 4 April 2015. Three series have broadcast so far.

Background

A revival of the 1960s science fiction television series Thunderbirds was approved by co-creator Gerry Anderson when the founder of Weta Workshop, Richard Taylor, visited him while he was working on New Captain Scarlet at Pinewood Studios at the time.[1] On 4 February 2013, ITV Global Entertainment and Pukeko Pictures officially announced the revival with under the title Thunderbirds Are Go![2] Production began in June 2013 at Weta Workshop,[3] while the principal voice cast was announced on 30 September 2014.[4]

Each series consists of 26 episodes split in two parts. The first series aired between 4 April–20 June 2015, resuming on 31 October 2015 and concluding 23 January 2016. A second series was greenlit on December 18, 2014[5] and broadcast between 22 October 2016–7 January 2017 and 30 September–16 December 2017. A third series was confirmed on 5 May 2016[6] and premiered on 31 March 2018.

Premise

Set in the year 2060, Thunderbirds Are Go follows the exploits of the Tracy brothers: Scott, Virgil, John, Gordon, and Alan. Together, they form the front-line of International Rescue (IR), an organisation dedicated to saving people from disaster using technologically advanced machines for land, sea, air and space rescue. The most important of these are five vehicles named the Thunderbirds, each piloted by one of the brothers:

  • Thunderbird 1 – first response rocket plane, piloted by First Responder and Team Leader Scott Tracy
  • Thunderbird 2 – auxiliary equipment transporter, piloted by Demolition, Heavy Lifting and Logistics Expert Virgil Tracy
  • Thunderbird 3 – space rescue rocket, piloted by Astronaut Alan Tracy
  • Thunderbird 4 – underwater search and rescue mini-submarine, piloted by Aquanaut Gordon Tracy
  • Thunderbird 5 – communications and logistics satellite space station, manned by Space Command Communicator and Dispatcher John Tracy

Aided by Head of Security Kayo Kyrano (also the pilot of Thunderbird Shadow, a stealth aircraft used for covert operations), engineer Brains, his robot assistant MAX, and the brothers' Grandma, the Tracy family reside on Tracy Island, their hidden base in the Southern Pacific Ocean from where they operate International Rescue. The organisation also enlist the help of English aristocrat Lady Penelope and her chauffeur Parker as their London field agents, whose primary mode of transportation is FAB 1, a six-wheeled car fitted with gadgets and weaponry – as well as flying and underwater capabilities – for espionage missions.

IR's main adversary is the Hood, a criminal master of disguise who steals technology and seeks possession of the Thunderbirds. Secretly the uncle of Kayo, the Hood is also responsible for the assumed death of the Tracy brothers' father, ex-astronaut and IR founder Jeff Tracy, after his ship crashed into the ocean. After the Hood is arrested and imprisoned by the Global Defence Force (GDF), IR face a new adversary called "the Mechanic", a mysterious and immensely threatening villain who uses highly advanced machinery to steal resources. Originally under the Hood's influence, the Mechanic breaks free of his control after breaking him out of prison, but is later arrested by the GDF. Meanwhile, the Hood renews his quest for global chaos with the aid of the Chaos Crew.

Cast

Notes
  • Kayvan Novak, Rosamund Pike and Teresa Gallagher also voice for various guest characters.
  • Archive audio of Peter Dyneley (voice actor of Jeff Tracy in the original Thunderbirds series) announcing the 5–1 countdown from the programme's title sequence is featured during the vehicles' launch sequences.

Production

The series is created in-house at Weta Workshop in New Zealand using a combination of scale model miniature effects (headed by Steven Saunders) and CGI. The revived series features updated character, vehicle, and set designs while retaining most features from the original series.[7] In total, it takes roughly a year to produce a single episode.

The series is executive produced by Estelle Hughes, Giles Ridge, Richard Taylor and Andrew Smith,[8] while David Scott acts as Series Director with Theo Baynton as Episode Director.[9] The head writer is Rob Hoegee, while Benjamin Townsend and Patrick Rieger contribute scripts regularly. Anthony Cox is a film editor on the programme,[10] and Ben Milsom does production design.

The production of each episode begins with a physical set design. The sets are created using methods similar to those employed in the original series, including the use of household objects as components. For example, the Thunderbird 1 launch bay of the original series featured an orange hand juicer, while the bay in the revived series features the same object. A film crew then devises camera setups for scenes to match with the movement and positions of the CGI characters and crafts that are to be later imposed upon the filmed footage, this also includes any special effects used on set, such as smoke and wind.

All CGI sequences are storyboarded before getting superimposed onto the live footage of the miniatures. Each set is then individually scanned as a 3D print to provide reference for the CGI elements to be accurately registered within the environments. This is followed by rough computer modelling of CGI elements needed for the sequence. Details are then introduced, including as textures, craft setup, atmospheric particles and flying debris. The UK-based company Milk VFX is responsible for the final composition.[11]

The musical score is composed by brothers Ben and Nick Foster. The revived series's opening theme and certain cues remain faithful to Barry Gray's score for the original series, albeit with a modern orchestral style.[12]

A large solar flare causes a malfunction at a mining operation on an asteroid, sending it careening towards the sun and endangering its only crewman, Ned Tedford. Alan and Kayo deploy Thunderbird 3, but another solar flare knocks out their sensors and communications. Although they land in the mine, using the asteroid (now too close to the sun) as a shield, they soon have to find a way to alter the asteroid's trajectory so that it slingshots around the sun instead of crashing into it - which is further complicated by the discovery that Thunderbird 3's low fuel supply from the second flare, could make it impossible to return to Earth.

On Jupiter's moon Europa, the stars of Gordon's favourite explorer program (Buddy and Ellie Pendergast) are searching for extra-terrestrial life. When they begin drilling into the ice, pressure from geysers cause the ice to crack and they plunge into an underground ocean ten miles below. Alan (in command) and Gordon blast off to the rescue in Thunderbird 3, with Thunderbird 4 stored aboard and modified with skis, powerful engines and a heat drill to penetrate the ice, which they lose due to strong underwater currents. They find the Pendergasts, who have taken shelter in their rover, but before they leave they detect a life form in the sea.

Fans and critics reacted very positively to the new series, despite some negative reactions from fans of the original version,[46][47][48][49][50] claiming the show was clearly made to attract a new generation of fans instead of appealing to nostalgia. ITV started to air episodes at 8 am (other than the pilot, which aired at 5 pm). Series 2, however, has been airing the show at 4pm on ITV and repeat it the following day at 8:30am on CITV.
