The Golden Eyes (Chinese: 黄金瞳; pinyin: huáng jīn tóng) is an upcoming Chinese drama television series starring Zhang Yixing, Xia Cici and Wang Yuexin.[1] The television series is based on the novel of the same name in Mandarin (Chinese: 黄金瞳) written by Chinese author Dayan. The television series is scheduled to be broadcast during summer of 2018 on Hunan Television.[2]

Synopsis

It is said that only individuals with the "spirit language" (言灵 in Chinese and Kotodama in Japanese) can possess a pair of Golden Eyes. A simple pawn shop worker, Zhuang Rui (Zhang Yixing) had his own eyes mutated after an accident while he was dealing with some ancient bronze and ceramic. His mutated eyes subsequently brought many changes to his life in many unexpected ways he could ever imagined. His new life started after he adopted the pair of special eyes and his spiritual adventure began. The dragon clan are the only individuals who have access to this power and Chuzi is the only person apart from the dragon clan who can utilise this magic power. However, Chuzi's level of mastery over the pair of golden eyes is not equal to that of the two brothers from the dragon clan, Lu Mingfei and Lu Weizhe, who are also bestowed with this magical gift.[3]

Production

This drama series shares the same production team with Zhang Yixing's previous 2016 television series, The Mystic Nine. Chief director, Ling Nan has previously directed The Mystic Nine Side Story: Flowers Bloom in February while the production team includes Daomu Biji writer cum screenwriter of The Mystic Nine, Xu Lei and the producers of The Mystic Nine, Bai Yicong and Zhang Yuanang.[5] This television series would be the producing team and Yixing's second collaboration. The novel saw a digital sales of over 30 million downloads online.[6]

Casting

A pre-release press conference was held on September 17, 2017 at the Phoenix International Media Center, Beijing where Zhang Yixing was announced to be the male lead for the series. Posters for the television series were also unveiled during the pre-release press conference.[7] The casting of the female lead became a trending topic for discussion on Sina Weibo after the announcement of the male lead.[8]

Zhang Yixing officially signed the contract for the television series on stage with the director and producers of The Golden Eyes during his album premiere "2017 Zhang Yixing Showcase" for his studio album Lay 02 Sheep which was held at the Beijing National Aquatics Center on October 12.[9]

Filming

Principal photography started with an opening ceremony on January 12, 2018 at Huairou District, Beijing.[10] Filming also took place in Ukraine from March 10 to March 17[11] and subsequently in Yunnan, Ningxia and Inner Mongolia.[12] The cast crew sourced for filming locations four months ahead of filming and went through much inconvenience of transporting equipment to remote locations due to harsh terrain.[12] Filming for all 60 episodes took a total of 150 days.[13]
