On 31 August 2015, Baite's home was torched in a mass demonstration in Churcachandpur after some bills were passed in the Legislative Assembly to protect indigenous people in Manipur.[2][3] The homes of Manipur Minister-in-charge of Family Welfare Phungzathang Tonsimg, and five MLAs, including Manga Vaiphei of Henglep assembly constituency and Vungzagin Valte of Thanlom were also burned in the demonstration, which killed 9 and injured 27.[4] One of those that died was found in the charred remains of Vaiphei's home.
