"Teri Meri" (English: Yours and Mine) is a Hindi song from the Hindi film Bodyguard, starring Salman Khan[1] and Kareena Kapoor.[2] The song was sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Shreya Ghoshal.[3] The song was composed by Himesh Reshammiya, while its lyrics were penned by Shabbir Ahmed. The song along with the other tracks was released on 27 July 2011.

Origin

The melody of the song Teri Meri is copied from the very old carols representing spiritual singing of Orthodox Romanian Church tradition, usually sung on Christmas Celebrations by many Orthodox Christians (which can be Romanian celebrities, such as Cleopatra Stratan in 2009[4] or Paula Seling in 2009 [5]/ priests in 2008 [6]/ or sung by normal people) to express their joy for Christ`s birth. Carols preserves some of the oldest Romanian poetic achievements being inspired from Holy Scripture and Holy Tradition, occupying an important place in the creation of Romanian people.[7]

The translation of the original Romanian spiritual song "La Vifleem Colo-n Jos" lyrics should be emphasized and compared with the Indian version, since for Christians Orthodox may represent a blasphemy the fact the copyrights of the melody were taken and changed the lyrics of something which it is not owned.

Lyrics of the original Romanian carol: "Down there at Bethlehem The sky burns brightly The most pure one gives birth today to Christ She gives birth in the stall of the oxen To everyone’s Emperor The most pure one, sits and cries slowly She neither has swaddling clothes to wrap Nor clothes-to-wear for the baby of Emperor Do not cry, my mother! Do not cry, my mother! Swaddling clothes we will give you, Virgin, to wrap the holy baby At Bethlehem down there."

Composition and picturization

"Teri Meri" is a sad romantic song sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Shreya Ghoshal. The song is high on Sufi touch, while it scores on vocals.[8][9] The song is also available in remix and reprise version.[10]

The song is a romantic number from the film Bodyguard. "Teri Meri" was picturised on Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor. It was choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant. The song's music is a remake of the background music in the film House of Flying Dragons.

Reception

Ruchika Kher of the Indo-Asian News Service reviewed the song as moderately paced and a quite average song.[8]

The Times of India placed Teri Meri among the top 10 songs of 2011.[11] The song was non-mover for 19 weeks at No. 1 on The Official Asian Download Chart show on BBC Asian Network, hosted by Bobby Friction. It went on to being one of the few songs to have been in the chart for over an astonishing 30 weeks.[12] The song had also won awards for Shreya Ghoshal at the 13th IIFA Awards, BIG Star Entertainment Awards 2011[13] and the 2012 Apsara Awards for Best Female Playback Singer.
