Amazon.com, often referred to as simply Amazon, is an American electronic commerce and cloud computing company with headquarters in Seattle, Washington. Since 1998, several companies have been acquired by Amazon. Amazon has diversified its acquisition portfolio into several market sectors.[1]

  • Alexa Internet, a database company[9]
  • Accept.com, a financial services company[10]
  • Drugstore.com 40% investment in 1999,[11] increased stake in 2000,[12] sold stake to Walgreens in 2011 for a 90% loss[13]
  • GeoWorks, a wireless communications company, acquisition of a minority interest[14]
  • Pets.com – Amazon purchased a 54 percent stake[15]
  • LiveBid.com, which produced Internet-based auction software[16]
  • e-Niche Incorporated, comprising Exchange.com, Bibliofind.com (hard-to-find book titles), and Musicfile.com (hard to find music titles)[17][18]
  • HomeGrocer.com – Amazon purchased a 35 percent stake in this online grocer[19]
  • Gear.com – Amazon purchased a 49 percent stake[20] (the company was purchased by Overstock.com in 2000)
  • Tool Crib of the North, Amazon acquired the online and catalog sales division of the company in October 1999, selling a very wide variety of tools and home improvement items[21]
  • Convergence Corporation, software to connect wireless devices to the Internet[22]
  • MindCorps Incorporated, applications for web sites including online chats to web-based databases[23]
  • Della.com, gift registry, expert advice, and personalized gift suggestions – Amazon purchased a 20 percent stake[24] (in April 2000, the company merged with WeddingChannel.com[25])
  • Back to Basics Toys, catalog toy store[26] (sold to Scholastic in 2003)[27]
  • Ashford.com, retailer of luxury products – Amazon acquired a 16.6 percent stake[28]
  • Leep Technology Inc., developer of on-line database query tools and CRM software[29]
