Tafsir al-Thalabi
Al-Kashf wa-l-bayān ʿan tafsīr al-Qurʾān (Arabic: الكشف والبيان عن تفسير القرآن) or Tafsir al-Thalabi ( ISBN 9004127771) is a classical Sunni Qur'an commentary (tafsir) by Islamic scholar Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Thalabi.[1] It is composed of 10 volumes and it is over 3,425 pages.
Flaws in the Tafsir
Mufti Muhammad Taqi Usmani has written in his "'Uloomu-l-Qur'aan (An Approach to the Qur'aanic Sciences)" (page 469-70):
The narrations of Ibn Abbas reported from the following sources are weak: ...Muhammad Ibn Sa'ib Al-Kalbi from Abi Salih from Ibn Abbas ... and when Muhammad Ibn Marwaan As-Suddi As-Sagheer reports from Kalbi, this is regarded by the authorities as a false sequence ... It is wrong to ascribe it to Ibn Abbas because this book has been based on the reported sequence of Muhammad Ibn Marwaan As-Suddi As-Sagheer from Muhammad Ibn Saa'ib Al-Kalbi from Abi Salih from Ibn Abbas (R) ... this has been regarded by the Muhadditheen as "chain of falsehood" and hence cannot be relied upon ... The Commentators Al-Tha`labi and Al-Wahidi has reported a vast number of narrations from this sequence....
These narrations must be avoided by Sunni Muslim readers, translators, and scholars who follow the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali jurisprudence and the Ash'ari and Maturidi creed of Sunni Islam.
