Stephen "Steve" Murphy (born 1957) is an ex-DEA agent who, along with Javier Peña, was one of the lead investigators in the manhunt of Colombian drug lord and the leader of Medellín Cartel, Pablo Escobar.[1]
Biography
Murphy grew up in West Virginia, where he graduated from Princeton High School in 1974 and attended West Virginia University for a year. He transferred to Bluefield State College, from which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice in 1981.[1] He joined the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in mid-1980s and started working in Miami, where he stayed for four years, before being transferred to Bogotá, Colombia. He played an important role in the killing of Escobar. After Escobar's death, in December 1993, he returned to the United States, where he continued to work with the DEA until his retirement in 2013. Today he heads a law-enforcement private consulting firm.[1]
Popular culture
He is one of the main characters in the first two of three seasons of Netflix TV series Narcos, in which his character is portrayed by Boyd Holbrook.[2] Murphy himself worked as a consultant on the show. He makes a cameo appearance in the last episode of Season 2, "Al Fin Cayó!", alongside Peña.
