Javier Peña is a former DEA agent who investigated Pablo Escobar and the Medellín Cartel with his former colleague Stephen Murphy.[1][2] Peña worked as a consultant on the Netflix series Narcos.[3] Peña was not involved in the DEA's Cali Cartel activities; his involvement in that investigation in season three of the Netflix series is a fictional account.[4] Following the investigation of the Medellín Cartel, Peña worked for the DEA with additional assignments in Puerto Rico, Texas and Colombia. Peña retired from the DEA in 2014.[4]

Peña was raised in Kingsville, Texas, and attended Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville) where he studied Sociology and Psychology.[4]

He is one of the main characters in the three seasons of Netflix TV series Narcos, in which his character is portrayed by Pedro Pascal. Peña himself worked as a consultant on the show. He makes a cameo appearance in the last episode of Season 2, "AL Fin Cayó!", alongside Murphy.
