Silsila Badalte Rishton Ka (colloquially known as Silsila)[1] (Translation: Sequence of changing relationships) is a 2018 Indian Hindi television drama series, which premiered on 4 June 2018 on Colors.[2] The series is produced by Sunjoy Waddhwa under the banner of Sphere Origins.[3][4][1]

The serial is about the difficulties of contemporary love stories[5][6][7][8][9][4][10][11], love triangle and extra marital affairs. The series also focus on domestic violence against women.[12] It stars Shakti Arora, Aditi Sharma, Drashti Dhami and Abhinav Shukla in the lead roles of Kunal, Mauli, Nandini and Rajdeep respectively.

Plot

The show is about two childhood friends who get separated and after seven years they met, Nandini and Mauli. Later, Nandini falls in love with Kunal, Mauli's husband. The story further moves with the track on extra marital affair.[13]

The show starts with two childhood friends, Nandini and Mauli, who lived in Lucknow, and were extremely close to each other. In the present day, the series focuses on two couples, Kunal and Mauli, Nandini and Rajdeep.[14] Mauli and Kunal have been married for three years and are very much in love with each other. Kunal is a pediatrician and Mauli is a gynecologist. They support each other through everything and are very close.

On the other hand, Nandini and Rajdeep have been married for seven years. Nandini is a victim of domestic violence. Rajdeep is an ambitious businessman who owns pathology labs. Rajdeep is a dominating husband, treats Nandini badly, and doesn't leave any chance to abuse her, both physically and mentally. Rajdeep often fails to control his behavior and misbehaves with her in front of public.[15]

Nandini and Mauli had a fallout because Nandini chose Rajdeep (her now husband) over Mauli's friendship despite Mauli warning her of his bad character and personality. Therefore, they have neither seen nor spoken to each other for seven years. They both live in the same city, Mumbai, with neither of them being aware of it.

Due to past differences, Mauli is angry at Nandini and refuses to speak of her to Kunal even though he repeatedly asks her about it. At a medical conference, Kunal ended up running into Nandini for the first time while saving her from a road accident. He gets to know that her husband abuses her and advised Nandini to speak up against the issue. He later discovers that she is the same friend his wife keeps reminiscing about and talks to Mauli about it. They both decide to schedule a meeting.

Nandini and Mauli met after seven years. Prior to the meeting, Rajdeep assaults Nandini, which results in her pregnancy. She hopes the baby will improve her and Rajdeep's relationship. But, Rajdeep is not ready for children and so he beats Nandini and leaves her in the middle of the road. Kunal ends up finding her and takes her to the hospital where Mauli attempts to save both the mother and the child. However, Nandini ends up miscarrying. Finally standing up to Rajdeep, she reveals it all to Mauli and Kunal at hospital. They both kick Rajdeep out and take Nandini to their home.

With repeated attacks from Rajdeep at their house, from showing up drunk in the middle of the night to posting private pictures of Nandini online,[16] Mauli and Kunal save Nandini from it all. Mauli and Kunal convince Nandini that she should speak up against her abusive husband, so Nandini tells to the police about Rajdeep and he is arrested on domestic violence charges.

Rajdeep sends a friend of his, Dr. Makijha - whom he attempted to sell Nandini to in return for a business favor, to Kunal's party in order to insult Nandini by calling her prostitute. Nandini gets upset and tries to commit suicide but Kunal saves her and she requests him to not speak of the incident to Mauli. Mauli is planning to buy a place for Kunal's clinic, which is Kunal's lifelong dream.

Mauli and Kunal take Nandini for a long drive on a rainy day, where Nandini frees herself of her marriage by breaking her mangal sutra and dancing. Kunal is awestruck of seeing her dance and is mesmerized by her. He reminds himself that he has a wife, Mauli, who loves him very much but fails to control his thoughts about Nandini.[8][9][4][10][11][1]

Kunal tries to get Nandini out of his head by asking Mauli to get Nandini her own house, to make her independent. Family members disapprove of the idea. Nandini also believes that she is interfering in a married couple's life and tells Mauli that she wants to move out. Mauli begrudgingly accepts.[17]

Later, Rajdeep gets out of jail, and wants to take revenge on Nandini. He acts like a good husband with her, by sending flowers and gifts. He asks her to give him one more chance and come home. Mauli and Kunal are hesitant about Rajdeep's new change in character and Nandini is confused on whether to go back to Rajdeep or believe that some people can never change.[18] Nandini figures out that Rajdeep has not changed. She takes her mangalsutra, goes to his house and returns the mangalsutra and declares that she is done and will no longer associate with him; she is no longer his wife. She leaves saying that she is finally giving herself a second chance.[19]

Realizing that Rajdeep will never stop harassing them, Nandini decides to give divorce to Rajdeep, but he refuses to comply.[20] Kunal's family, Mauli and Nandini went to a temple since Kunal's grandmother (Deeda) wanted to celebrate her deceased son's 60th birthday by climbing a 1000 stairs and praying in his favorite temple. Due to a landslide, Kunal and Nandini get separated from the others and decide to go to the temple by themselves to fulfill Deeda's wishes. By this time, Kunal has already been feeling something for Nandini but for the first time, Nandini begins to feel the same for Kunal. After returning, they both decide to avoid each other and hide their love for each other.[21]

After many instances of awkward staring and avoiding each other's paths, Kunal's car gets squished when a bridge falls. Seeing this on the news, Nandini runs for him, scared that something might have happened to him. After seeing him okay, she runs and hugs him. Realizing what she was doing, Kunal slowly breaks the hug and says that he's fine. Nandini sees Mauli coming and runs, realizing what she had done. She gets angry for doing what she did and feeling what she does and therefore punishes herself by sitting in cold water.[22] Nandini requested Kunal to find new house for her as the best option for them both is to create distance. She then shifts into a new house.[23]

Kunal saved Nandini from fire when they were locked in the room and he helped to set up Nandini's home where they also hug each other for second time.

Meanwhile, Nandini decides to leave town because she also cannot control her feelings and emotions. Finding this out, Kunal runs to the bus stop and stops her there, confessing his love for her and she doing the same. She tells him that this is wrong while he claims the opposite and grabs her arm and takes her to her home from where Kunal opens his arm to hug her. Nandini and Kunal hug each other and spend quality time with each other. Mauli reached Nandini's house. Nandini afraid and Kunal hide and came out of Nandini's house. From that day, Nandini and Kunal begin starting to talk to each other through SMS. Deeda invites Nandini to Janamasthami celebrations. Kunal requestes Nandini to wear red saree. Nandini follows Kunal wish. Nandini comes to Kunal's house where Kunal was shocked to see Nandini in red saree and Mauli also shocked because Mauli is also wearing red saree in present day.[24] Rajdeep tries to rape Nandini[25] but Nandini saved herself. Hearing about Rajdeep, Mauli gets angry while Kunal is more angry than Mauli. Mauli wanted to meet Nandini but Nandini liesto Mauli by saying that she is feeling sick because Nandini is meeting with Kunal in restaurant. Mauli sees Nandini but She is not able to see Kunal as Kunal is behind the wall of restaurant.[26] Mauli goes inside the restaurant but phone rings and she is informed of her brother’s sudden marriage. Mauli informs this to Kunal. When Nandini and Kunal reach the mandir, Mauli gets angry on Nandini for telling her lies and says that she hate lies. Nandini cries and begs for Mauli forgiveness. Mauli forgives Nandini. Mauli's mother stops Nandini from going inside the mandir by insulting Nandini and blamed Nandini for breaking her own home. Nandini cries and runaway, Kunal sees all but cannot speak a word in front of Mauli's mother.[27] Kunal runs after Nandini by leaving Mauli's brother wedding. Rajdeep tries to tell this to Mauli but she doesn't believe him.[28] Mauli sees Nandini and Kunal together hugging each other and Mauli found out about Nandini and Kunal's love and breaks down.[29] Kunal's mother order Kunal to leave the house.[30] Rajdeep beats Kunal and Nandini saved Kunal from Rajdeep.[31] Mauli wanted to leave Kunal's house whe she see the Kunal still have relationship with Nandini. Controversy

In the beginning, the makers and one of the main lead, Drashti Dhami told that the series is not about extra marital affairs but how circumstances takes place in couples lives[4] and channel programming head of Colors stated that the serial is about exploring an evolved and modern love story.[1][11]

In September 2018, some audiences were not happy about the storyline and blames the makers and main cast for showing extra marital affairs content on national television.[41]

They started to troll on the main cast of the series on social networking sites.[41][42] They trolled Drashti Dham and Shakti Arora for playing and choosing the character of Nandini and Kunal. Shakti Arora gave the indirectly replied to troller by uploading the image of him and named as:

If nobody hates you, you are doing something boring.[41]

Then someone replied to Shakti Arora's post by saying:

Putting up such captions would not make your character [Kunal] any better.. I am extremely disappointed by your character and honestly, I hate you and drashti for being so ridiculous. I mean how could someone write this kind of a storyline. Disgusting! You are surely gonna break relationships and also give them a stupid reason to do that.. pathetic serial.[41]

In returns to the troller comment, Shakti Arora also gave quickly replied by saying:

Then stop watching the show [and] do something constructive in life.. god bless...[41]

When trollers trolled Drashti Dhami, Aditi Sharma came out in support of Drashti Dhami by saying:

I have to say the role [Drashti Dhami choose] as Nandini requires a lot of courage. Only a true artist [and] a strong person can do that. I love her for the loving caring helping person she is. I request everyone that instead of getting personal [why] don't we appreciate [and] encourage her boldness.[42]
